Can anyone tell me why there are long holes through the streets of Jo’burg? Are they laying cables for communication of some sorts? Are they testing the water below? Has it got to do with the major culprit of the moment, they Gautrain?

Someone with some sort of knowledge around this topic please help me understand why Rosebank and many other places in JHB are littered with holes?
