Ster-Kinekor ruined District 9. Not on…

Ster-Kinekor ruined District 9.

Not only for me but for an entire Cinema of ±300 people last night.

Let me make it clear that this is NOT my review of District 9. That will follow. This is a post expressing my extreme sadness, disappointment and frustrating horror at the way that Ster-Kinekor handled a cinematic breakdown.

To begin with move didn’t start on time, which isn’t a massive problem for me but it adds to the frustration that I feel now.

We then all pile in to the cinema. I decided it was a good idea to see this movie in a big Cinema at trusty old Sandton City. So we took up our spots in seats B6 and B7 in Cinema 10, Sandton City at the 19:45 show.

The adverts and trailers went off without a hitch ofcourse, these are the people who are paying Ster-Kinekor to ensure that things run smoothly not us, the end viewer. But then the actually movie started and things went downhill from here.

For the first 30-40 minutes of the movie there was an unbearably loud cracking sound.

Most people in the back 5 rows stopped and turned around to see what it could be. To give you an idea of the sound, pick up that magazine next to you, go to your dining room table and with all your strength smack the magazine on the table. That’s the sound we were fighting with.

Then I got up to inform someone of the noise because no one else in the cinema was moving. So I get up and miss about 6 minutes of the film looking for someone to speak to.

But no one is around, no one is monitoring the film. Eventually I find someone who meanders up to the room where technical things happen.

For the next 15 minutes the cracking went from a crack to a click to no sound in the left speakers to no sound in the right speakers to gone.

Then it was gone and we were good to go for the next chunk of the film.

But then the sound started to disappear and this is where I begin to get seriously irate. We are moving towards the climax of the film and people are clearly starting to get agitated with the situation.

Then the sound is gone.

It just stops and for about 4 minutes nothing happens, no one fixes it and no one comes in. And then the sound and the picture are gone and the lights come on, in the middle of the climax of the first South African Blockbuster film, Ster-Kinekor stops the film and turns the lights on.

Some cocky, arrogant person (one can only guess he was a manager) strolls in the cinema and says:

“Everybody stay calm,” Calm? Calm I hear you say. I am calm.

I am not panicked but what I want is for you to stop stuffing about and put the movie back on.

He stammers out something of an irrelevant apology: “We’re sorry but there is no way to remind, we are trying to fix the problem but that’s all, just stay calm and relax.”

RELAX?

And that was that. The film that I have blogged about and waited to see for months was ruined by this arrogant little manager who didn’t, couldn’t even offer up a proper apology.

Ster-Kinekor destroyed my experience of District 9 and I didn’t even get an apology.

Absolutely shocking. It reminds me of watching Harry Potter 5 at Nu Metro Montecasino Il Grande on opening night when Harry lost his voice – yeah the front speakers blew. Nobody seemed to care or could fix it. Instead of moving us to a new cinema, they just fiddled and finally gave us comps. But what a major let down.

Oh don’t get me started on Nu Metro Pavilion where they lost power not even 5 minutes before the end of a movie. Bleh.

NuMetro at Monte is pretty good … there have been a few problems now and then, and the manager’s comped us (and anyone else who was unhappy) for a free movie so we could watch the filem again – or another one.
And they ALWAYS “rewind” and start from the beginning again.

However, the staff behind their popcorn counters could possible move a bit fasrer on the whole if they were dead ;)

You could almost understand it, if there were people frantically running around behind the scenes trying to fix the problem. It’s shocking that the cinema’s (I have had a similar experience @ Nu Metro) do not have someone in the projector box monitoring the film.
I hope you have demanded some sort of compensation!

Are you sure that the aliens weren’t attacking your theatre? ;)

What a disappointment, Nic. I was looking forward to your write-up of the movie. Being in Korea, who knows when I’ll get to see it. I can’t believe that they (management) held the situation so terribly. Shocking and embarrassing for Ster Kinekor :( I hope you’re going to write a letter of complaint to them. They should compensate you for your time and money. Who knows who else of those 300 people would have written about it like you have.

    That’s big business for you…

I once had to watch an entire movie out of focus… on close to the end did the technician actually focus the projector… but then it was to late…

Ah no man that is such shit! Wow, absolutely horrible. I feel you man. Our theatre also had crappy sound, at the climax of the movie, the sound softened, I was like WTF! Give me the sound. Alas, I’m to check the movie again.

But seriously, that’s the worst movie experience I’ve ever heard. I once watched I, Robot and the movie got cut in the middle, but that’s because there was a fire in the mall, so everyone had to be evacuated. Everyone got comps so it was good.

Ster Kinekor just don’t give a shit anymore bro. And I am convinced they are recycling some of their popcorn … It’s just an epic case of “Who gives a shit, coz we don’t” type of attitude..

Hey. This really does suck. Have just had a chat with the SK marketing people and they said your first port of call to complain should be 08216789. I have forwarded this post to relevant people at the SK head office and will follow up with them. Once again, on behalf of SK, we do acknowledge that this is unacceptable and will be investigating management at Sandton City SK and will get back to you soon.

  10. 2/09/2009Nic says:

Thanks Walter. Appreciate the assistance and am glad someone at SK is aware of the terrible service delivered at Sandton.

To be honest, I am not going to be calling the number they provided. At that point in time (at the movie) I shouldn’t have even had to complain it was so bad. Someone should just have apologised and gotten on with it. Let’s see how this plays out!

Again, I appreciate your response and finally, that of SK.

Fork. I would have been SUPER annoyed. I would have walked out. Honestly, I probably would not have complained as I avoid confrontation, but I would have wimped out and thrown my toys out the cot to my husband or someone else I have no qualms about shouting at. I’m a wimp. I know.

  12. 2/09/2009Walter (Total Exposure) says:

Cool. Total Exposure (@totalexposure) handles publicity for SK on the exhibition only. We don’t usually deal with complaints but online complaints add a whole new dimension to that old system of dealing with things. Will keep you posted as things develop.

Nice to know certain people have their ears to the very ground you walk on buddy…way to go #SKfail

  14. 2/09/2009David Alves says:

They should give you free comps for life…is there no other recourse you wanted other than an apology?

  15. 2/09/2009Razzzy says:

OMG!.. thats horrible,, I would demand some compensation dude… Thanks for the warning.. I aint going there to watch it…

If you call the number above (08216789), you end up in the callcentre. I tried that and quickly got through to an agent. BUT all he can do is send an e-mail to the manager! I’ve been in this situation before and the only people you can find at night is the one person who waits to lock up who is only able to shrug and look helpless. I understand there is a projectionist and one would expect him to get a look-in on each theater every 15 minutes or so. But that does obviously not happen always.

  17. 15/09/2009Angel says:

Seriously you guys should make the trek out to the other side of the world, I’ve never had issues at either Bedford Center if you want Nu Metro or Eastgate if you want Ster Kinekor! I went to see District 9 on opening weekend at Eastgate and it was amazing, no hitches or glitches and if you do need a manager, they super easy to find (location: right next to the bathrooms)

i watch approximately 20 movies a month, provided that many are released. out of these, only 2 or 3 are actually checked during its running time- which is a requirement that goes undone. guys try out the less prestigeous cinemas eg. go to musgrave instead of gateway. somehow the people at these ones just try a bit harder.

  19. 28/10/2009David Venter says:

This is exactly why I avoid cinema. I much prefer watching a movie on my own 42″ LCD and home surround sound, without the movie F***ing out and without random strangers eating popcorn really loud. Going to a cinema nowadays is just nasty… And of course on top of being nasty, they F*** up the films…
