I absolutely loved this post. You are so right about the musicians of today being the poets of the past’s replacement.

I’d definitely have to add Alanis to your list though. Some of her songs can only be deemed poetry.

I agree with you. I love poetry as well, and there is a place for it in modern society, not only in music – although that’s the most accessible (and seemingly desirable) format. Interesting that you posted “The Road Not Taken.” Have you seen Jay Parini’s recent essay in the Washington Post?

Have a look at David Whyte. He’s a Yorkshire-born full-time poet who now is relatively famous for lecturing corporate leaders and managers in “conversations and languages that we do not yet have for areas that we have already entered”.

Nic, it is not that we discard poetry as an art but the starightjackets of iambic pentameters and all, where there are rules governing rhymes and syllables thats what i disagree with.
