Hmmmmm! Tis a bit harsh. I havent really been a fan of the day and I often steer clear of anything red in my wardrobe, but its fun to just stop overthinking things and just enjoy the moment.

Love has been commercialised. Does that mean you're going to stop celebrating your love for your hormonal other?

At the end of the day, the capitalists, commercialists and the rest of the steal-your-money-and-leave-you-broke crew are just giving you an opportunity to take something and give your own spin on it. Make of it what you will

Quite agree.

It used to be a purely American mania, which one only learnt avbout though Nancy and Sluggo comics, but now there are ads from Hallmark and all the rest. Now it seemsd to be no longer cards, they are trying to con you into giving gifts, as if that were normal.

I still try to ignore it, though.

@JayX: quite the opposite actually. I've had a girlfriend much like Nic's almost 3 years and I like Valentines day as it gives us a chance to spend some time together. We're both busy a lot of the time so it makes a nice change. Ultimately it's not like we don't make time the rest of the year but it is nice to occasionally have an excuse.

Sorry to SaulK, but it sounds to me like you are in need of some TLC, hence the sensitivity on this issue. We have ample marketing forced down our throats on a regular basis and Valentine's day is just another excuse for wasting money ... I thought that was the point of the post. My GF also suggested a quiet evening at home (which means I am not allowed to work as late as I usually do) away from crowded restaurants and also does not pay the marketing machine much heed, but then we try and arrange as much of that as possible already ... besides a hand made card from a graphic designer sounds awfully cheap to me.

Fair enough and I suppose I am allowed the luxury of cynicism due to a down-to-Earth girlfriend who thinks V-Day is up to shit as well! :)

Valentines needn't cost an arm and a leg, the lazy person gets ripped off. The innovative guy gets creative. The lucky guy gets his girlfriend to organise everything!

I agree that you should consistently do things throughout a relationship and I see Valentines as one of those times.

Hahahahaha, OK, I can see that point I suppose, but my main focus here is on the fact that almost EVERYTHING costs you twice as much or more on that day and around this period. What a waste.

Sure there are other things to do and innovative ways to do them, but why not do them consistently throughout a relationship?

I totally disagree Nic! Valentines day is a money making scam but why not have a specific day to celebrate your love for another person?

Any idiot can see the commercialism in the day as well as how dumb it is to be extra nice to their SO on a specific day but I just think why not? I mean any excuse in my mind.
