It used to be a purely American mania, which one only learnt avbout though Nancy and Sluggo comics, but now there are ads from Hallmark and all the rest. Now it seemsd to be no longer cards, they are trying to con you into giving gifts, as if that were normal. I still try to ignore it, though. Quite agree.

I've had a girlfriend much like Nic's almost 3 years and I like Valentines day as it gives us a chance to spend some time together. We're both busy a lot of the time so it makes a nice change. Ultimately it's not like we don't make time the rest of the year but it is nice to occasionally have an excuse. @JayX: quite the opposite actually. We have ample marketing forced down our throats on a regular basis and Valentine's day is just another excuse for wasting money ... I thought that was the point of the post. My GF also suggested a quiet evening at home (which means I am not allowed to work as late as I usually do) away from crowded restaurants and also does not pay the marketing machine much heed, but then we try and arrange as much of that as possible already ... besides a hand made card from a graphic designer sounds awfully cheap to me.
