Social Networks AKA dating sites and crap websites

by Nic Haralambous on 4/09/2007

I absolutely hate it when people talk about things without doing research or knowing what they are saying. I am sure I have done this on the odd occasion in the past but it still bugs me.

I just read this post that talks about social network sites as commonly known as dating sites too. Since when? This post has such an air of “authority” about it that ignorant readers would actually believe this rubbish.

Then the author proceeds to include god’s plan for our lives including these “dating sites”. The author then mixes things up by saying that one should join social networks (or dating sites) to network with people and make links to begin to build a network of people who can help you, over 3-5 years build the sort of life you want to lead. Uhu?

What a load of hogwash. And this sort of revelation comes from a website that looks like this:

crapsites.gif

It is very scary to me that there are actually people out there who are:

1. Promoting this sort of crap site as something people can and should use
2. Using these sites as their personal blogs.

I have a feeling that this is a Guy Mclaren website. This guy (no pun intended) seems to be promoting the very worst of the web as the contemporary web styles. What is he thinking? Can he not see that his user system is rubbish and outdated? Why would anyone want to use this sort of platform when even the dreaded blogger is better than this platform?

I am so shocked that anyone is registering for this service and this crap. Come on people. Wake up, make a stand. Don’t use this rubbish.

I will offer my somewhat inexperienced services to anyone who is thinking of using the rubbish service above. If you are thinking of starting a blog, email me and I will offer you some assistance on where to go and how to do it. Just as long as you aren’t using the above services.

I have a colleague that uses Facebook as a dating tool, and has been quite successful it too. He’ll ‘poke’ any hot ladies listed as single, if she pokes back it’s game on – tedious work involved though. The success rate is less than 5% but thats a lot better than 0%. So hey I suppose it could be used as a dating service…

That’s a fair point, kinda weird, but fair! But my point is, one cannot refer to ALL social networks as “dating sites”. There is a massive difference between a dating site and a social network. Digg, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon are all social networks with NO dating possibilities.

Also not too sure why why you took that blog post so seriously, written so badly I couldn’t understand most of it.

  4. 4/09/2007Nic says:

Good point, it’s a useless post, but that’s y I took it so seriously. Because that whole network of blogs are treating themselves as authorities on various topics and I think that many readers are falling for their rubbish. It bugs me.

The nature of the net allows me to rectify their posts for the reader. Not that I am some massive authority, but I can make the experts aware of their misleading posts and opinion.

Guy’s from Nelspruit… I only found out Nelspruit actually had internet this weekend. Nelspruit is not entirely the mecca of the South African web industry is it?

Sad really… One of two possible things could happen:

    1) At R274 per website “system” he will hopefully go bankrupt and dissapear… or..
    2) Lots of people will see R274 as a moerse bargain, and we will see the rise of an entire R274 website empire… save us! (This is now overlooking that wordpress is free?)

Those sites look like they were designed in 1999

  7. 5/09/2007Guy McLaren says:

First things first, That is not my site, It belongs to Wade Balsdon, I think Wades internet inexperience shows in that post.

Secondly The R274.00 empire is growing. Watch that space. As to my lack of skills. Many clients will at test that my cheap badly designed site gives them results. Many of my clients are total newbies yet are earning money from those sites.

Nic If you are going to accuse me of being somebody else I would suggest you take your foot out of your mouth before changing gears. Do your homework man, Your investigation skills are about as good as your ability to keep appointments.

Nic, what makes you an authority on blogs? Since when have you been the authority and the judge of what constitutes a valid blogging forum? Who died and made you the class room monitor?

Despite the fact that my website looks like it was designed in 1999, I am doing business from it. The objective of having a business site is to gain income. My site does this very successfully thank you. Why don’t you go and do some work and stop mucking with my efforts to put food on my table. Get a life and grow up!!!!

  10. 5/09/2007Nic says:

Guy – I’m sorry if you misunderstood me, I know you didn’t write the post or own that site, but you did design it as part of your incredible amazing R274 promo-brilliant-design-site deal? Or am I mistaken there too?

Wade – Did you read my post above? I actually state that I have also spoken about things that I don’t know about. I have NEVER claimed to be an authority, take that as you want. What I can claim, as much as Guy or anyone else does, is that I know what looks good, I design blogs and have designed many for clients and my personal start-ups.

I also know many of the top designers in the country. They would ALL attest to the fact that the site I speak of is rubbish. Simple.

Adrian, Charl, Tyler – Thanks! Touche and well said.

  11. 5/09/2007Nic says:

Wade – One more thing, I didn’t mock your livelihood my man, that’s just the way you chose to interpret it. I can’t believe that you do business from that site. This is exactly what I am talking about. Are the people who take you seriously from that site blind?

Have they ever used the web before? They are clearly outdated. But hell, if it works for you then so be it and rock on.

  12. 5/09/2007Vincent Maher says:

Wade, while we’re here I might as well tell you that the contact form on your web site doesn’t work. The email I wanted to send you went like this:

    Dear Wade,

If you continue to submit individual blog posts as blogs on Amatomu I am going to delete your account and mark you as a spammer for life.

    Kind regards
    Vincent Maher

  13. 5/09/2007Guy McLaren says:

Vincent thank you for that, I will investigate the issue immediately. Wade made a noob mistake which I pointed out to him yesterday.

  14. 5/09/2007Guy McLaren says:

Vincent, what did you do because it worked for me.

  15. 5/09/2007Vincent Maher says:

    Nada, what was the problem?

  16. 5/09/2007Guy McLaren says:

    Haven’t found one.

  17. 6/09/2007Wezzo says:

Wow, looks like Guys Trafficdepartment site has been hacked. There a pic of ‘Jacob Zuma is my hero’ all over it.

  18. 7/09/2007wade says:

Hey Nic I see I go and change my site to prevent twatty comments like you made and guess what ? Some scum sucking pigs wiped my site. If you know who these delinquents are there is R10 000 in it for you.

  19. 7/09/2007wade says:

    Vincent

I have emailed you twice about the blog submitting on Amatomu, do you think you could please repsond to me via my email?

    Kind Regards,

    Wade

  20. 7/09/2007Nic says:

Hey wade. I am sorry but I have no clue who the idiots are who did that. It’s not cool no matter was said between us and Guy. That’s just not cricket.

I’ll keep my ears to the ground (or the wire) as it may be.

You know what Nic, you could have contacted me to give e the rules of muti and your opinion of what I wrote. It was one of my first blogs and I got excited about blogging. Yours and they other marvels behaviour is so typical of people in this country, that is why it is in the state it is in. Things like this really test one’s faith but you know what as Jesus himself said “forgive them for they know not what they do” Nice thing too though is you reap what you sow.

All; these sites Facebook, Twitter and all these socalled Dating sites, I’ve tried Smoocjh and Zoosk..The idea is meet new friends, unfortunatly for people who are lonely or socially excluded, they compound the problem. Why because most people who are using them have no interest in meeting new people, they simply add friends (purely so they can show off how may friends thry have), then they totally ignore you after that..There is no kindness in strangers, the more people you try to contact, the more rejections you get, the more inadequate you feel…Maybe at 52 I’m just too old for it..I was certainly meant to feel that way..most of the ..speak…they use on there is like a foreign language to me.

Its damaging society, people used to met at work in bars and become lifelong friends, partners, now its just like window shopping trying on shoes…it kills face to face social contact and relationship building
